On October 12, Rivet released agentOS 0.4 — a new version of the platform for launching AI agents. The main new feature is the Hosted VMs API, which allows creating persistent cloud virtual machines for agents and managing them via code.
Virtual machines are created by identifier through the RivetKit client or standard HTTP requests. This simplifies the scenario where each agent or user gets its own isolated environment.
Developers get a single typed API for working with files, processes, terminals, software installation, networking, and cron jobs, as well as for executing JavaScript, TypeScript, and Python code.
VM configuration is preserved after restarts, and process output is not lost upon reconnection. A temporary preview link can be created for any port, and JWTs with restricted permissions allow the browser to connect directly to a specific machine.
The release also introduces dynamic software installation during VM runtime and improved APIs for managing processes, terminals, and the file system.
The release aligns with the year's main trend — the shift of AI agents to long-term autonomous operation. Isolated environments, like those in agentOS, help run agents more securely by limiting their access to only the necessary resources.
